Reliance One Walks for a Cure!

May 20, 2013

Auburn Hills, Mich. – Last Saturday, thousands of people came out for the 21st annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure in downtown Detroit. . A number of Reliance One employees and their families participated in the 22nd annual race.  “The weather was beautiful and it was great to see such an amazing turn out. This is such a great cause and we are glad that we can contribute towards the research and the cure of breast cancer.” Says, Chad Toms, National Sales Manager at Reliance One.

About Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®

Susan G. Komen, who is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, is an inspiration who fought breast cancer with everything she had. Throughout her diagnosis, she spent her time coming up with ways to make life better for other women fighting breast cancer instead of worrying about her condition. Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything she could to end breast cancer forever.

That ‘promise’ is now known as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, which has invested more than $1.9 billion since its start in 1982. They work together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and motivate scientists to find the cures needed. Thanks to events, such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from sponsors and fellow supporters, they have become the largest source of nonprofit funds devoted to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Day of Service in Oakland County

Reliance One’s WE BUILD TEAMS philosophy goes hand in hand with Leadership Oakland’s mission that explains their devotion to “develop leadership skills, expose individuals to key issues impacting the region and enable participants to reach their full potential personally, professionally, and through public service to their communities.” Reliance One has recently registered as a sponsor for the 2013 Day of Leadership.

Leadership Oakland is calling out to all community members that are willing to help improve local organizations. Volunteers will complete spring projects such as planting a community garden, painting a building exterior, and general clean up. The following establishments will benefit from the developments, Community Housing Network, Incorporated, Crossroads for Youth, and Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. The “Day of Service” is Saturday, April 20, 2013 from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. with a celebration for the volunteers following everyone’s hard work. Chris Cardenas, Account Manager at Reliance One, and his family have signed up to support Leadership Oakland by volunteering on a project from the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. The Reliance One family supports the efforts of Leadership Oakland and encourages everyone to go out and make a positive change in the community.

Casual For A Cause

“Denim Day,” was a huge success at Reliance One, Inc. As a fun and professional company, it was a great opportunity for the employees to support a cause while enjoying the perks of wearing jeans to work. Funds raised on Friday April 26th will go to HAVEN, an Oakland County organization that assists victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. The inspiration for this event was a result of L. Brooks Patterson encouraging the community to participate; the owners did not hesitate once they found out the great cause that the company would be supporting. As a result, Reliance One matched 100% of the contributions made by their employees. For more information about participating in Denim Day or making a donation to support victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, contact HAVEN at 248-334-1284, ext. 346.

As active members of the community, Reliance One and its employees continue to host fundraising events to support local causes. Currently the team is working to sponsor a wish through the Rainbow Connection. The team is about a quarter of the way to their goal with a Cinco De Mayo Celebration planned for Friday May 3rd and another event scheduled at Air Time Trampoline on June 6th. For more information regarding the Rainbow Connection please visit: http://www.rainbowconnection.org.

Leaders Are Born, Not Created.

What does it take to become an effective leader? Sadly, few put in the time and effort it takes to improve their leadership skills. As author of the article, Learn to Listen to Your Team, Jim Kim recognizes leadership as a contact sport suggesting you will only find success in leadership if you listen to your team and understand how they respond to you.

At Reliance One, We Build Teams. Our sales teams consist of Account Managers and Recruiters that are constantly working to develop themselves. Technical Recruiter, Wes Oliver, quotes “When I started, I made it clear I wanted to move into sales. My Manager Ryan Long supported my goal, set an example, and consistently pushes me to improve.” One of the motto’s “Don’t get comfortable” is constantly used around the office by Vice President, Jim Paquette. This motto reminds everyone that there is no finish line when striving for success. Our leaders expect change and are willing to adapt to whatever mission is set before them.

A company leader, Jeff Gardner states, “You cannot lead if you are not approachable.  At Reliance One we have created an open environment where our leaders actively seek out the opinions of everyone in our company.  Though it is important to be decisive as a leader, it is important that every employee is heard, even if everyone does not agree.  It is important to lead but, just as important to listen and solicit feedback.” Learn more about the “sport” of leading in the article below, http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20130226114206-32702694-best-advice-learn-to-listen-to-your-team
